DAYTON SNATCHES WIN FROM LA SALLE IN 2OT
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Dayton men’s soccer team recorded a dramatic win over La Salle on Sunday with a 3-2 double-overtime victory in Philadelphia.
The Flyers went back out on the road in search of its first away win in Atlantic 10 play this season.
La Salle took an early lead with goals in the 11th and 20th minutes. That put the visiting Flyers in a big hole with 70 minutes left in the contest.
The Flyers were able to get on the board in the 41st minute with a goal by junior Greg Enstone. Redshirt freshman Rafael Gamboa provided a nice pass from the left and picked up his second assist on the year.
Dayton went into the half with a 2-1 deficit, but momentum in its favor.
The Flyers used that advantage to start the second half and managed to even the score at 2-2 in the 55th minute. Senior Abe Keller took a free kick and senior defender John Howe was on the receiving end. Howe scored his first goal of the season while Keller picked up his team-leading ninth assist on the year.
That score would hold for the rest of regulation as Dayton headed into its fourth overtime game of the year.
The first overtime period was uneventful as neither team was able to score the golden goal.
With just four minutes remaining the second overtime, Dayton got the game-winning goal from a familiar source. Senior Andres Acevedo scored with a header off a La Salle defender to end the game and give the Flyers a 3-2 double overtime victory.
Acevedo’s only other goal this year gave Dayton a 3-2 double overtime win over Incarnate Word on Oct. 4.
The win was the first for Dayton on the road in Atlantic 10 play this season.
Enstone, Acevedo, and Howe provided the goals for Dayton while Keller and Gamboa provided the assists.
The Flyers (12-2-2, 2-2-2 A10) will remain on the road next weekend for a contest against Massachusetts at 3 p.m. on Friday.
