Dayton soars to 3-0 win over Saint Francis

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton men’s soccer team scored three second-half goals en route to a 3-0 win over Saint Francis Friday in front of 1,104 fans at Baujan Field.

The Flyers capped off a busy night in Dayton Athletics with their first win of the season, moving to 1-2 on the year.

SCORING BREAKDOWN

  • 64th Minute – Dayton 1, SFU 0 – Freshman Rok Taneski took David Lianes’ cross at the back post and drove it home for UD’s first goal of the season.
  • 71st Minute – Dayton 2, SFU 0 – Senior Tommy Harr struck a free kick into the box where junior Nick Hagenkord redirected into the back of the net.
  • 80th Minute – Dayton 3, SFU 0 – Hagenkord got his second of the game and season with a quality finish at the back post on a cross across the face of goal by Taneski.

KEY STATS

  • Dayton out-shot Saint Francis in the contest 10-6, putting seven on target compared to the Red Flash’s three.
  • In the first half, UD had a 7-0 corner kick advantage. In the second half, SFU had a 5-0 corner kick advantage.
  • Taneski led the Flyers with three shots, all on target, a goal and an assist.
  • Goalkeeper Justin Saliba recorded three saves in the shutout victory.
  • There were three yellow cards and a red card (SFU’s bench) given out in the game.
  • 16 different Flyers made an appearance.

CURRIER’S COMMENTS

“The team responded well tonight after a good week of training. With so many new faces, we still have a ways to go but there was growth tonight. We had several moments in the game that our press and counter press were relentless which created several opportunities. Our finishing was much sharper and it was a strong team effort. It is a quick turnaround so recovery will be important for Sunday's match.

  • The Flyers remain at home for another doubleheader with the women’s team on Sunday. Dayton women host Purdue at 1 p.m. before Dayton men host Belmont at 4 p.m.
