DEFENSE CLINCHES DAYTON FLYER CLASSIC TITLE
DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton men's soccer team competed for the 2013 Dayton Flyer Classic tournament title on Sunday against Lipscomb. A pair of goals by senior Abe Keller gave the Flyers a 2-0 win over the Bison Sunday afternoon.
Dayton needed just five minutes to open up the scoring with a headed goal by senior Abe Keller. Grad student Eddie Jones placed a free kick on the back side of the goal where senior John Howe headed the attempt back across the face of the goal. Keller was in the right place and finished the pass with a diving header over the top of the goalkeeper. With that, the Flyers led 1-0.
That score would hold up for the rest of the first half as the Dayton defense held off every Lipscomb attack. The Bison recorded six shots in the first 45 minutes compared to the Flyers' three attempts.
In the 56th minute, Keller stepped up to a free kick 20 yards out on the left side of the goal. The senior midfielder curled in a shot to the back post with his left foot that cleared the outstretched hands of the goalie, making it a 2-0 contest in UD's favor.
The Flyer held strong for the rest of the game and blanked the Bison attack on the day. Dayton picked up its first shutout of the season.
After a hot and competitive match at Baujan, Dayton came out on top 2-0. With that win, the Flyers won the 2013 Dayton Flyer Classic.
Keller finished with both goals in the match while freshman goalkeeper recorded three saves in his first shutout of 2013.
Senior Abe Keller, sophomore Amass Amankona, Chris Lenning, and Maik Schoonderwoerd were named to the All-Tournament team for the Flyers. Lenning also earned tournament MVP honors for his efforts as Dayton allowed just one goal the entire weekend.
The Flyers (3-0-0) will head back out on the road next weekend for a pair of contests in the Missouri State Tournament. UD will take on Western Illinois Friday and Detroit on Sunday.
