Delaware Nips LIU-Brooklyn 1-0
Blue Hen freshman forward Emily Market’s first collegiate goal provided the offensive punch as the University of Delaware women’s soccer team edged Long Island University-Brooklyn, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Long Island University Field.
Delaware (3-4) posted its second shutout victory in 2012 while LIU-Brooklyn (2-6) has tallied five shutout losses this season.
“I think today was a result of hard work training and continued hard work on the field,” Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda remarked about his squad’s shutout victory. “We were able to maintain our pressure and keep a clean sheet.”
Market tallied her first goal of her career at the 34:20 mark of the first half from the left side of the field about 12 yards away from the Black Birds goal. Senior Melissa Pennington added a helpful assist on the play that gave Delaware an early 1-0 lead over LIU-Brooklyn.
In the final 45 minutes of the second half, the Blue Hens defense led by senior Polly Reinicker kept the Blackbirds’ offense in check en route to the shutout.
Blue Hen junior goalkeeper Jess Levy made one save in the win. It was Levy’s second shutout victory of the season.
LIU-Brooklyn goalkeeper and reigning Northeast Conference Goalkeeper of the Year, Jennifer Bannon, made one save in defeat.
Delaware registered only two shots on goal with senior Ali Miller joining Market with one. LIU-Brooklyn took three shots in the loss and had only one shot on goal that was taken by junior Shino Kunisawa.
The Blue Hens return home and begin Colonial Athletic Association action on Friday, September 21 at 7 p.m. when the Delaware hosts the Towson University Tigers at 7 p.m. at Delaware Mini Stadium.
