Demery scores three of six Warrior goals
TURLOCK — In a historical event at Warrior Stadium, Karenee Demery picked up right where she left off in 2012 as the senior forward scored a hat trick in the opening match of 2013 to lead the Warriors to a 6-0 overwhelming win over Simon Fraser.
The match marked the first time Cal State Stanislaus hosted an international opponent in soccer at Warrior Stadium.
With great team work, excellent passing and stifling defense the Warriors scored six times — the most goals in a game since 2008 — and notched 10 assists to open the year in style. All the while kept SFU from any chances.
Demery scored twice in the first half, twice assisted by Emily Relles. Demery then added a third score just 4:03 into the second half for a hat-trick. She also scored three times last year against Simon Fraser in Burnaby, B.C. Demery, who scored 19 goals for the second time in her career last season, now has 57 career scores.
Demery's third score, which made it 3-0, was especially impressive. After tapping the ball to Katelyn Nebesnick, Demery streaked up the far side. Nebesnick finds Sabrina Williamson front-and-center to the goal as she was turned towards the near sideline. Without looking back, Williamson passed the ball backwards to Demery for an amazing score.
Allie Dugan scored in the 52nd minute to make it 4-0. Then two late goals by Gabriela Vargas (71:28) and Nebesnick (79:54) accounted for the final.
Relles, who set a single season record with 12 assists last season, picked up two more tonight. Williamson and Nebesnick were each also credited with two assists.
SFU goalkeeper Simone Tessler was sprayed with 31 shots by the Warriors as Cal State Stanislaus out-shot the Clan, 31-1. Simon Fraser didn't have its lone shot until 13:37 left to play — a long, 30-yard boot that was no where near the goal. Tessler picked up 11 saves.
Stanislaus keeper Chelsea Lewandowski was never really challenged as the defense and midfielders kept the Clan away.
