Denver Dominates in 7-0 Victory Over South Alabama
DENVER – With a goal and two assists from senior midfielder Kari Storslett (Bakersfield, Calif.), the University of Denver women’s soccer team was able to defeat the South Alabama Jaguars 7-0 at CIBER Field on Friday evening.
“I thought that we played some really good soccer tonight,” head coach Jeff Hooker said. “I thought that we kept the integrity of the game going and defended well as a team, which helped us attack and get more goals.”
Junior forward Kalie Vaughn (Fort Collins, Colo.) scored a pair of goals for the Pioneers (11-2-0, 5-0-0 SBC), and freshman midfielder Anna Willis (Centennial, Colo.) and sophomore midfielder Nicholette DiGiacomo (Golden, Colo.) both had a goal and an assist.
Junior midfielder Katy Van Lieshout (Boulder, Colo.) and sophomore forward Kristen Hamilton (Littleton, Colo.) also found the net. Sophomore forward Cassidy Larson (El Dorado Springs, Colo.) added two assists in the win. The victory extended DU’s record Sun Belt Conference winning streak to 19 games.
On the night, DU put up 26 shots to only four by the Jaguars (9-3-2, 2-2-1 SBC), while converting on seven of 13 shots on goal. The Pioneers also led 6-1 in corners.
Willis put Denver on the board first in the 40th minute. Sophomore midfielder Sara Riazi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) dribbled up the right side and found Storslett, who sent a pass over the defense. Willis received it in stride and beat USA goalkeeper Melissa Drish.
Just 14 seconds later, Storslett sent a quick pass to Hamilton, who flew past the defense and beat the goalkeeper from just inside the box, giving the Pioneers a two-goal lead at halftime.
The Pioneers came out strong in the second half, as Storslett scored off a pass from DiGiacomo in the 47th minute, and Van Lieshout goal came off a pass from freshman defender Sam Harder (Centennial, Colo.) in the 51st minute.
DiGiacomo scored off an assist from senior forward Taylor Bailey (Loveland, Colo.) in the 62nd minute, and Vaughn sealed the victory by scoring the game’s final two goals.
The Pioneers finish off their home stand against Troy on Sunday at 12 p.m. MT.
