Denver Falls to Cal State Fullerton 4-2

September 23, 2011

FULLERTON, Calif. University of Denver men’s soccer found itself behind two first half goals away from home, and weren’t able to build-up a comeback, falling to Cal State Fullerton 4-2 on Friday.

The Pioneers (1-4-2) gave up a goal just after the opening whistle as Titan junior midfielder Oscar Aguero scored his second goal of the season just 23 seconds into the match. CSF would get a goal from sophomore midfielder Ritchie Gonzalez in the 36th minute to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room.

Denver cut that lead in half in the 50th minute when senior midfielder Jarod Stigall (Plano, Texas) played a cross into the penalty area to the head of junior defender Drew Beckie (Highlands Ranch, Colo.,), who knocked the ball off the post and into the back of the net.

Just as Denver started to look for the equalizer, the Titans (6-1-1) scored twice within 54 seconds (70th and 71st), to put the game nearly out of reach at 4-1.

Beckie added his second goal of the game, and his third of the season, in the 72nd minute off another header, this time hitting the opposite post off a free-kick service from junior midfielder Josh Wren (Tulsa, Okla.)

The Pioneers conclude their two-game California road trip against Cal Poly on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. Denver will return home to open up Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play against Air Force on Oct. 1 at CIBER Field.
