DENVER— The University of Denver men’s soccer program added six players for the 2012 season, head coach Bobby Muuss announced on Tuesday. Chandler Crosswait (Bedford, Texas), Reagan Dunk (Dallas, Texas), Karsten Hanlin (Centennial, Colo.), Malcolm Harris (Damascus, Md.), Logan McHugh (Aberdeen, Md.) and Jordan Schweitzer (Everett, Wash.) all signed their National Letters of Intent.

Denver’s 2012 class includes three players in the College Soccer News top 80 recruits in the nation, an NSCAA All-American and an All-American game invitee.

“What I am most excited about with this year’s class is that we got a group of young men who are not only outstanding soccer players, but winners who are determined to help the University of Denver program succeed,” Muuss said. “The background of this group includes championships at every level, from high school to state cups to national finals. The staff and I searched for a group of skilled soccer players with competitive attitudes and winning habits, and we believe we have assembled that in this recruiting class.” 

In his four previous seasons with the Pioneers, Muuss and his staff have brought in a top 40 class each year (No. 19, No. 18, No. 37 and No. 19). In 2012, the Pioneers will return their top three scorers in junior Drew Beckie (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and two members of Muuss’ No. 19, 2011 class in Christian Volesky (Henderson, Nev.) and Brian Hoyt (Tempe, Ariz.).

The Crimson and Gold graduate three players from the 2011 squad. Muuss and his staff plan to announce other 2012 recruits later this spring. Bios from the 2012 class are below.

Chandler Crosswait

Club: Played for Solar Chelsea Soccer Academy, captaining the team in 2010 • ranked as the No. 40 recruit in the nation for the 2012 class by College Soccer News • ranked as the No. 16 player in the Texas Region by TopDrawerSoccer.com • picked for the adidas Disney Showcase All-Star Team in 2010 that traveled to Chelsea Football Club in England • Texas State Cup champion with Solar SC. 

High School: Attends L.D. Bell High School in Bedford, Texas • earned F­irst Team All-District honors from 2009-11 • named to ESPNU Top XI • earned Academic All-District honors.

Personal: Born November 12, 1993, in Louisville, Ky. • son of Phil and Kristin Crosswait• has one brother, Charlie • chose Denver because of the campus and the soccer program • involved in Young Life and National Honor Society • enjoys playing soccer and several other sports • plans on majoring physical therapy • also considered Southern Methodist, Kentucky, Central Florida, George Mason, North Carolina-Wilmington, Northwestern, Dartmouth and North Carolina-Charlotte.

Bobby Muuss on Crosswait: “When Chandler visited campus last year, all of us felt like he belonged here. He is a tremendous young man, a very motivated player and is constantly looking for ways to improve his game. Chandler will join us from Solar Soccer Club which has a great reputation of developing great college and pro players under coach Kevin Smith. With Chandler we get an attacking player with a lot of creativity that we believe has a great future in our program.”

Reagan Dunk

Club: Played for Solar Chelsea Soccer Academy • ranked No. 77 in the nation for the 2012 recruiting class by College Soccer News • picked for the U.S. Academy Select Team for the Winter Showcase in 2009 and 2010 • named to the ESPN Rise Texas All-Star Team in 2011

High School: Attends Lake Highlands High School in Dallas, Texas • named First Team All-District forward in 2010 and 2011, and a First Team All-District defender in 2009.

Personal: Born February 8, 1994, in Dallas, Texas • son of Timothy and Terri Dunk • has one sister, Erin • chose Denver because of the soccer program, the locations and its reputation for academics, including one of the best business schools in the nation • involved in Mu Alpha Theta math honor society, Young Life, yearly mission trips and several different service projects • enjoys playing soccer, pet sitting and playing the guitar • hopes to one day obtain a job in either business or healthcare • plans on majoring in business • also considered Southern Methodist, Kentucky, North Carolina, Wake Forest and Central Florida.

Bobby Muuss on Dunk: “I am extremely excited about the addition of Reagan Dunk. Reagan is a very well rounded, complete player. He is a big, strong, athletic defensive player with good feet and a good understanding of the game that will fight right away for a spot along our backline. Reagan, like his teammate Chandler, has a great pedigree coming from one of the best youth programs in the country Solar Soccer Club.”

Karsten Hanlin

Club: Played for Colorado Rapids Development Academy • also played for the Colorado Storm • selected for the U17 MLS Cup in 2010 • listed on the Colorado Rapids Regional Watch List • reached the State Cup Semifinal in 2008 and 2009, and won the State Cup in 2006 and 2007 with the Colorado Storm • ranked No. 18 in the Rocky Mountain and Southwest Region by TopDrawerSoccer.com 

High School: Attends Cheery Creek High School • named 2011 Preseason All-American and 2011 Colorado ESPN Rise All-State Starting XI • won the Colorado 5A State Champion in 2010 • named 5A All-State First Team in 2010 and 2011, and honorable mention in 2009 • earned All-Centennial League First Team honors 2009-11 • named to High School Soccer All-American game in 2011.

Personal: Born December 13, 1993, in Denver, Colo. • son of Joe and Karen Hanlin• has two brothers, Jacob and Larson and one sister, Kaycie • chose Denver because of the great soccer, great coaching staff, location and its great business school • enjoys skiing, swimming, playing guitar and participating in his youth group • hopes to one day play professional soccer • plans on majoring in international business • also considered Cal Poly, Santa Clara, Point Loma, George Mason and San Diego University.

Bobby Muuss on Hanlin: “Karsten is a local Denver player that we have followed for a couple of years now. In my opinion we were lucky to get the best player in Co. to stay in Co. He has versatility and a competitiveness that instantly attracted us to him. He can play in a couple of different attacking spots, as well as in the back. Like his incoming classmate Jordan, he comes from an MLS academy (Colorado Rapids) where he has had opportunities to play with professionals. This can only help his development.”

His ability to play on the attacking side of the ball combined with his willingness to win it back when his team doesn’t have it will help him find a consistent place in the lineup. Malcolm Harris

Club: Played for Baltimore Casa Mia Bays •  ranked No. 28 nationally in the 2012 class by College Soccer News and No. 37 by Topdrawersoccer.com  • earned a third place finish in US Academy Finals Week (July 2010) with Baltimore Bays • claimed a USYSA National Championship in 2009 (U15) • picked for the adidas Disney Showcase All-Star team in 2010 that traveled to Chelsea Football Club • attended U14 and U15 U.S. National Pool Camps

High School: Attends McDonogh High School in Owings Hills, Md. • led McDonough to 2011 MIAA Championship •  earned NSCAA All-American, All-State, First Team All-Metro Baltimore, First Team All-Conference twice and Montgomery County All-Decade honors during a successful career at McDonogh and Good Counsel High Schools.

Personal: Born January 24, 1994, in Damascus, Md. •son of Christopher and Sadia Harris • has one brother, Gyasi, and one sister, Shana • chose Denver because when he visited here he loved everything about the university, and couldn’t picture himself anywhere else • hopes to play professional soccer • undecided major • also considered Maryland, Louisville, Central Florida and George Mason.

Bobby Muuss on Harris: “We are excited to be adding Malcolm to our program. He is a very versatile player that can play along the backline and in the midfield. Not only is he one of the top recruits in the country, but Malcolm is a winner. He comes from the No. 1 boys club in the country, The Baltimore Bays, which everyone in soccer circles around the country knows breeds winners and championships under coach Steve Nichols. Malcolm chose Denver over a long list of schools, and he is the type of player that we believe will continue to push DU soccer towards more conference championships and NCAA Tournament runs.”

He has a rare quality as a superstar: most superstars are all about themselves, but Malcolm is willing to step out of the limelight if that is what is best for his team, and I have never seen a player of his caliber do that in our country. There is no doubt he will help Coach Muuss elevate Denver to one of the top programs in the country. He did it with the Bays, he made an average team the U-15 National Champion in 2009, and led our U-16 in 2010 and our U-18 2011 to the US Development National Finals. ”

Logan McHugh

Club: Played for Baltimore Bays Chelsea •earned a third place finish in US Academy Finals Week in 2010 • claimed two USYSA National Championships: in 2007 (U14) and 2008 (U15) • won a US National League Championship in the 2007-08 inaugural season of the title.

High School: Attends West Nottingham Academy, in Colora, Md. • named First Team All-Conference after being the leading scorer in the Mid-Atlantic Independent League • repeated the statistical achievement in his senior season, this time earning All-Conference MVP honors.

Personal: Born April 21, 1993, in Baltimore, Md. •son of John and Suzie McHugh• has three brothers, Kyle, Wade and Jacob • chose Denver because of the location, atmosphere and all the other qualities that this school had to offer • undecided major • also considered Wake Forest, Akron, VCU, UMBC and Temple.

Bobby Muuss on McHugh: “The first thing I think of when I think of Logan is “Soccer Player”. He has a great sense and feel for the game. In this recruiting class we wanted winners and there is no better description of Logan than that, he is a winner. With Logan we add another player from the ten-time national champion Baltimore Bays Club and he has had great success as a result of their competitiveness. He is a left footed, tricky, versatile player with great instincts for the game that we feel will fit in well to the DU program.”

Baltimore Bays Director of Coaching Steve Nichols: “Logan McHugh is an incredibly skilled and technical player who can change a game immediately with his attacking ability. Logan is a winner and is willing to do whatever it takes to help his team win. Case in point; he like Malcolm led our Bays team to the 2007 U-14 National Championship, 2008 U-15 National Championship, 2010 U-16 US Development Academy National Finals, and the 2011 U-18 US Development Academy National Finals. His resume speaks for itself.”

Jordan Schweitzer

Club: Played for Seattle Sounders FC Academy Team •also played for WA ODP 94, which he also captained • US Development Academy National Finalist • 2010 ODP Region IV runner up, and was named to the First Team • traveled to Europe with Crossfire and competed in the Super Cup Ratingen and the Swiss U16 Cup.

High School: Attended Henry M Jackson High School, in Everett, Wash., captaining the team his junior year • named Freshman Honorable Mention • named First Team All-WESCO • won the Washington State Cup Champion.

Personal: Born April 19, 1994, in Dallas, Texas •son of Darwin and Kari Schweitzer and Connie Schweitzer • has two sisters, Taylor and Rachael • chose Denver because of the determined and motivated style of the soccer program at DU • plans to earn a degree at DU before pursuing a career in professional soccer •involved in coaching at the Seattle Sounder FC Summer Camps (2010-12) and a CE project/collection drive to send soccer gear to Thailand •enjoys snowboarding and traveling• undecided major • also considered Washington, North Carolina, San Diego State, Oregon State and Seattle.

Bobby Muuss on Schweitzer: “Jordan is a very, very good soccer player in the truest sense of the phrase. He is a good passer of the ball, he strikes a good ball from distance, he reads the game well and is a soccer junkie that is constantly analyzing and working on his game. He comes from an MLS academy (Seattle Sounders) where he has been exposed to the highest levels of American soccer. All these qualities along with just being a great kid make Jordan a very good fit for DU.”
