Online Release | Denver 2-0 Omaha (Swander 10’, Adler 53’) | Altitude Highlights
DENVER – The University of Denver women’s soccer team got goals from sophomore forward Leah Swander (Grand Junction, Colo.) and freshman Hannah Adler (Oak Park, Calif.) and kept its fifth cleansheet in league play en route to a 2-0 win over Omaha on Sunday afternoon at CIBER Field at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. With the win on Sunday, Denver took a share of its first Summit League title since 2013.
On tiebreakers, Denver (8-9-1, 5-2-1 Summit) will have the two seed in next weekend’s Summit League Women’s Soccer Championship. The Pioneers will take on three-seed South Dakota State in one semifinal, while hosts and top seed North Dakota State will battle fourth-seed Oral Roberts in the other semifinal. Match times for next week will be confirmed by the league office at a later time.
“I’m very proud of how hard this team has worked in Summit League play this season. They deserve this,” head coach Jeff Hooker said. “I thought the entire weekend went well. When you score seven goals for and none against, you have to feel good about the weekend. We’re playing our best at the right time of the year. We have our banquet tonight, so we’ll enjoy this regular season title tonight, and then we need to turn our focus to next weekend and the Summit League Tournament.”
Sunday’s regular season title is Denver’s second in four years in the Summit League and the eighth Division I regular season title (five Sun Belt, one WAC) overall, all in Hooker’s tenure.
Swander got Denver on the board in the 10th minute, sending a shot from 25 yards over goalkeeper Haley Shelton’s head and into the side netting from the right channel. The goal is the second of Swander’s career and junior Angelica Pacheco (Taos, N.M.) earned the fourth assist of the season and her career on the opener.
Adler doubled the Pioneers advantage on the other side of halftime, finishing a deflection off the keeper from in-close for the fourth of her freshman season.
The Pioneers outshot Omaha (5-11-3, 3-4-1 Summit) 20-11 in the match and took seven of the 10 corner kicks.
Freshman goalkeeper Brittany Wilson (Littleton, Colo.) played all 90 minutes for the third-consecutive match, keeping at least a share of her sixth cleansheet this season (two solo). Wilson made one save on Sunday afternoon.
