Despite a Strong Second Half SFU Falls to WWU
Bellingham, WA - The SFU Clan women's soccer team were shutout 1-0 this evening by the Western Washington University Vikings in Bellingham, WA. With the loss, the Clan fall to 1-8-0 on the year (0-7-0 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action) while WWU improves to 6-3-2 on the season (5-2-0 in GNAC competition).
After a strong start against Western Oregon last Saturday, Amelia Ng (Richmond, BC) was back in net for SFU.
The Clan began the game a little slow as WWU controlled the play for most of the first half. Western Washington managed four shots in the first and Ng made three saves in the Clan goal. The lone goal of the half came early when Emily Frankland scored in the eigth minute for her fifth goal of the season. A missed assignment left Frankland open and Justina MacDowell found her with a good pass. Frankland put a great shot on net from 12 yards out to beat Ng and give WWU the 1-0 lead.
There was no scoring in the second half, meaning the early goal from Frankland would hold up as the game winner. WWU managed three shots on net in the second and Ng was perfect in the SFU net, making all three saves. The Clan had one shot on net in the second half which was stopped by WWU goalkeeper Jamie Arthurs.
While they couldnt find the back of the net, SFU did rebound and play a strong second half against the Vikings.
"We we back on our heels a little in the first half and were probably fortunate to only allow one goal. Amelia played great for us once again and did a good job keeping us in the game," said Head Coach Shelley Howieson. "In the second half I thought we played some of our best soccer of the season. Ali (Trenter of Coquitlam, BC) and Karm (Jawandha of Delta, BC) put a lot of pressure on them in the second half. I thought Jenna (Piovesan of Burnaby, BC) and Kelsey (Atherley of Port Moody, BC) were stellar in the second half as well."
The Clan will have just over a week to prepare for their next contest against Seattle Pacific University next Thursday evening at 7:00 PM.
