Despite Whigham’s effort, FMU Women fall 6-2
FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University senior forward Tori Whigham scored one goal and assisted on another, but the University of Montevallo tallied five unanswered goals to claim a 6-2 Peach Belt Conference win over the Patriots, Saturday afternoon (Sept. 17) in women’s soccer action.
FMU (0-6-0, 0-1-0) will travel to Armstrong State University for a 7 p.m. kick-off on Wednesday, before hosting the University of North Georgia on Saturday, Sept. 24, at 4:30 p.m.
Montevallo junior Taylor Gonzales scored only 24 seconds after the opening kick-off. However, Whigham took advantage of a mishandled ball by Falcon goalkeeper Judith Perez-Bayon and shot into an open net at the 2:25 mark to knot the score at 1-1. It was the second goal of the 2016 season for the Ocean City, Md., native and the 12th of her career.
Whigham’s service into the box during the 29th minute was knocked in by junior Melina Much for her first career score, putting the Patriots ahead 2-1.
That margin stood until Montevallo’s Madison Ellis headed home a corner kick by Ally Reeves with only 16 seconds remaining before halftime.
In the second stanza, the score remained deadlocked until the 70th minute. However, from that point on the Falcons outshot the Patriots 5-3 and scored on four of the attempts.
FMU junior goalkeeper Casey Murakami registered four saves, while freshman Sydney Young relieved Perez-Bayon at halftime and earned the win despite not having to make a save in the final 45 minutes.
Montevallo outshot Francis Marion 13-7 and led 8-2 in corner kicks. Freshman Carli Gauthier led FMU with two shots.
