DeVault Named WAC Defensive Athlete of the Week
FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Katie DeVault was named Western Athletic Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week, the league announced Monday. The 5-9 Santa Ana, Calif. native started both of the Bulldogs games in goal and earned her second consecutive shutout.
"I'm so grateful to have won this award and am honored to be recognized," said DeVault. "But [the defense] really preformed. They're very talented players."
Ranked second in the WAC in shutouts (2), DeVault picked up five saves in 119:30 minutes on the pitch this past week.
"Katie has really stepped up her game and made some important plays for us," said Head Coach Brian Zwaschka. "She is part of a defensive unit that is starting to gel."
Her last shutout was against Loyola Marymount, ranked No. 21 in the nation by Soccer America.
She boasts a 0.097 goals against average (third best in the WAC) this season and has 15 saves in her four straight starts.
"As she grows into the leadership responsibilities we demand from the goalkeepers," added Zwaschka, "she will undoubtedly continue to have a very positive impact on our program. She's only really begun."
