(Santa Clara, CA) – San Francisco continued a busy stretch of its schedule Wednesday with a historic 2-0 shutout victory over ancient Bay Area rival No. 18 Santa Clara at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Dons (5-4-1, 3-0-0 WCC) win for the first time against the Broncos (6-2-3, 2-1-0 WCC) in the South Bay since a 2-1 NCAA Tournament win in 1993.
Overall it was just the fourth win at Buck Shaw Stadium for the Dons since 1967 in one of the oldest rivalries in Division I soccer. Entering the contest, San Francisco was just 3-17-3 in the South Bay.
“I am so pleased with the way these young men responded to the challenge,” USF head coach Erik Visser said. “This is not an easy place to get a result and not many teams have accomplished it over the years. In some ways we are so young that they don’t know any better. We showed a lot of resilience and composure. This is a tremendous win for the program and this young, exciting group.”
Freshman striker Miguel Aguila got USF on the board first with his fourth scoring strike of the season in the 41st minute. Aguilar sent an arcing shot to the far post from eight yards off a feed from freshman Wessel Westerhof.
Junior Vinny Caloiaro gave the Dons an insurance tally in the 65th minute off a brilliant cross from sophomore midfielder Mauricio Diaz De Leon. It was the second goal of the season for Caloiaro, who scored for the second straight match.
With the win, San Francisco posts its second consecutive top-25 victory in a span of four days. The Dons are 5-1-1 over their last seven matches after starting 2011 at 0-3-0.
Santa Clara held a 15-10 shot advantage and a 9-5 edge in corner kicks, but USF created solid opportunities and put together an outstanding defensive effort to had the Broncos just their second loss of the season. Santa Clara had given up just five goals in 10 matches.
Diaz De Leon led the way with three shots, while freshman midfielder Danny Kirkland added a pair of shots off the bench.
Junior goalkeeper Brendan Roslund collected his third shutout in four matches and made three saves. Roslund is the first USF goalkeeper to post a shutout at Buck Shaw since 1988
“It’s now very important for the team to stay grounded and to take it one game at a time,” Visser said. “Saint Mary’s will present another big test for us on Sunday. They are tough, physical and talented.”
San Francisco returns to WCC action when it hosts Bay Area rival Saint Mary’s Sunday afternoon at Negoesco Stadium in what will be the fourth match in nine days for the Dons. Kick-off against the Gaels is set for 1:00 PM at Negoesco Stadium.
