Double overtime goal propels Colonels into championship match
It took double overtime, but the Centre College women's soccer team advanced to the SCAC Tournament Championship with a 2-1 win over Birmingham Southern College Saturday, Nov. 5 in Birmingham, Ala.
In what looked like a repeat of a 0-0 tie between the two teams one week ago, the Colonels scored in double overtime this time around to improve to 14-3-2 overall, while the Panthers fell to 10-5-2 on the season.
Linda Amaya gave Birmingham Southern a 1-0 lead in the first half when she hit the back of the net with just over three minutes remaining in the half.
Freshman Anne Mitchell (Fayetteville, Ark.) tied the match at one apiece when she scored at the 64:37 mark in the second half.
From there the two teams battled back and forth with neither team able to score until the second overtime period when senior Aubrey Holle (Ft. Wayne, Ind.) scored on a header off an assist from junior Mary Taylor Kersey (Winchester, Ky.) 5:11 into the final period for the 2-1 victory.
The Panthers out-shot Centre 22-10, while the Colonels held a 10-8 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Kelli Lenz (Louisville, Ky.) earned the win by stopping six of the seven shots she faced.
Centre will advance to the championship match to meet Trinity University Sunday, Nov. 6 in Birmingham, Ala. Start time is set for 11 a.m. with the winner earning an automatic bid into the 2011 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament.
