Drury Hands Panthers Setback in Season Opener
September 3, 2011
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Ohio Dominican women''s soccer team opened the 2011 campaign on a sour note as Drury (Mo.) handed the Panthers a 2-0 setback Friday evening at Key Stadium in Indianapolis in both teams'' season openers.
Drury grabbed the early momentum shift as a red card and an ensuing penalty kick by Hillary Cockrell at the 19:02 mark put ODU in an early 1-0 hole.
Despite Drury having the one player advantage the rest of the game, the Panthers continued to put forth a strong effort and actually controlled much of the play, but fatigue began to play apart in the latter stages. Drury took advantage of the heavy legs with an insurance goal in the 82nd minute as Nicole Williams flipped a shot over the drawn out keeper for the 2-0 final.
Senior Sierra Patterson (Brecksville, OH) paced ODU with three shots, all on goal, while freshman goalie Laura Clark (Lapeer, MI) suffered the loss, while recording five saves in 90 minutes of work.
The Panthers are back in action at 2:30 p.m. this Sunday, Sept. 4 as they take on the Indianapolis Greyhounds in a non-conference battle at Key Stadium.
