Ducks Leave PSU Victorious
August 26, 2012
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Oregon Ducks soccer team leaves Portland State University victorious after beating the Vikings 1-0 on Sunday. UO comes out of their two game road trip to Portland 1-1 and is 2-1 on the season, while PSU falls to 0-3-0.
The Vikings started the game off with tons of energy and aggressiveness, as they were excited to play an in-state rival from a major conference such as the Pac-12. They were obviously hungry for a win and it showed in their effort.
“PSU came out and played very hard and very aggressively,” said head coach Tara Erickson. “We absorbed some of that pressure and also played aggressively and did a good job to match the intensity of their physical play. We settled the game down a little bit and started moving the ball and passing a little better.”
The Ducks’ freshman class continues to generate excitement throughout the program as forward Kristen Parr scored the game’s only goal, giving Oregon the win. Parr’s goal came in the 50th minute of action on a breakaway off of an assist by senior midfielder Scout Libke. The goal marks the third of the season for the freshman. “We were able to find some good gaps on the field. We got a great through ball by Scout and then a very settled and polished one on one finish by Parr,” added Erickson.
After both teams took four shots each in the first half, PSU came out firing and took ten shots in the second period. PSU ended the match with the advantage in shots (14-8), while both teams had five shots on goal and the Ducks held the advantage in corner kicks (6-3). Ducks goalkeeper Abby Steele recorded saves on all five of the Vikings’ shots on goal, bringing her season total to 17.
Oregon really settled into the game and was able to create several good chances. “Their goalkeeper really made some fantastic saves on some real good chances we created,” said Erickson.
Key players off of Oregon’s deep bench that performed well were Kelsey Foo in the midfield and Kiyomi Cook as a defender.
After a tough one against Portland on Friday night, Oregon was once again involved in a very physical match, committing 14 fouls, while PSU was whistled for 12 of their own. Two Ducks and one Viking were given yellow cards in the match.
UO returns to Pape’ Field for a game against UC Irvine on Friday, Aug. 31st at 7:00 p.m.
