Eagles Suffer Tough-Luck Overtime Setback at IUPUI
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com)—Despite outplaying its opponent for most of the game, the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team walked away with a disappointing 2-1 overtime loss Sunday afternoon, Aug. 28, at IUPUI. The Eagles outshot the Jaguars, 25-15, and freshman Angela Vultaggio netted her second goal in three games.
Eastern Michigan held IUPUI without a scoring attempt for a 48-minute stretch until the 102-minute mark, when the Jaguars started an offensive rush resulting in Megan Hock's game-winner off a corner kick by Kelli Parks.
Goalkeeper Kristin Haseley was called upon to make 11 saves for IUPUI, which improves to 1-3-0 on the season. Maggie Manville made six saves in her first action since the 2009 campaign for EMU, which falls to 0-2-1.
The Green and White launched a 25-shot attack with 12 on goal. These totals were the most for EMU since Sept. 7, 2010, when they fired 20 shots—10 on goal—against the University of Detroit.
Sophomore Stephanie Clarke finished the afternoon with four shots on goal and senior Chelsea Detrick tallied three in a solid performance. Defenders Emily Dzik, Emily Kowalzyk and Jessica Thomas played the entire 105 minutes.
After pelting Haseley with six shots on goal, the Eagles connected at last with shot number seven as Vultaggio scored her second goal of the season in the 38th minute. Vultaggio escaped two Jaguar defenders down the right wing before stuffing the ball into the far-side of the net for a 1-0 EMU advantage.
The Eagles' defense, which was without senior Julie Kaim for a second-straight game, kept IUPUI attackers at bay in the first half, allowing just a pair of shots on goal and blocking several more Jaguar attempts.
With momentum favoring EMU to start the second half, IUPUI quickly got itself back into the contest when Ashley Doreski knotted the score, 1-1, on a 15-yard shot off a pass from Kristin Pierce in the 49th minute.
Chelsie Oddan almost gave the Eagles the lead back in the 62nd minute when she rang a shot off the crossbar. A minute later, Detrick created another scoring chance, but her shot was denied by Haseley to keep the score tied.
The Eagles held the Jaguars shotless through the final 35 minutes of regulation and headed into overtime with a total of 21 shots, 12 on goal.
In the first overtime, EMU continued to dominate ball possession but did not register a shot on goal. Kowalzyk was issued a yellow card in the 100th minute amidst four Eagles fouls in the period.
The Jaguars found a spark in the second overtime, as Hock notched the winning goal off a corner kick in the 105th minute.
The Green and White will head back to Indy for its next game against Butler University Friday, Sept. 2. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.
