Early Deficit Sinks Warhawk Women
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team fell into an early hole that they could not climb out of in Sunday's 2-0 loss to North Central College. The Warhawks, 3-2, gave up a goal in the second minute of play and never generated enough offense to overcome the Cardinals, now 3-1.
After the early Cardinal goal, it took some time before the Warhawks put together a strong attack.
In the 31st minute, Elli Wahlberg (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) tested the NCC keeper with a shot on goal, but was denied and the Warhawks headed into the half down one.
UW-W's next quality opportunity didn't come until the 81st minute when Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) put a shot on net, but was again denied.
North Central added a goal with less than three minutes to play to bring the score to 2-0.
The host outshot the visiting Warhawks 12-8, but UW-W earned six corners to the Cardinals' one.
Nina Yonan (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) made four saves to bring her season total to 20.
The Warhawks played three games in four days and will have little time to recover as they return to the field to host Luther College on Wednesday, September 12 at 5 p.m.
