Early momentum carries women’s soccer to 3-0
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A goal from freshman Ellen Lundy in the third minute of action carried the Lipscomb women’s soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Alabama State Friday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
Lundy, the reigning College Sports Madness Atlantic Sun Player of the Week, came with an assist from fellow freshman Brooke Coakley.
The Lady Bisons improves to 2-2-1 overall. LU snapped the Hornets three-game win streak as they fell to 3-2-0.
The early energy was a welcome sight for Lipscomb head coach Kevin O’Brien.
“We were real intentional this week in training in talking to the team with how we start the game,” O’Brien said. “We wanted the right energy, the right concentration, the right focus and they came out and did that tonight and it paid off.
“That early goal gave us momentum and positive energy.”
A pair of second half tallies helped secure the victory for the Lady Bisons as Lundy picked up her second goal of the game and her second career multi-goal game.
Lundy received a pass from junior Baylee Linnell from the left side of the net on the goal line. Lundy had one touch on the ball and placed it into the back of the net.
Linnell added a goal of her own in the 62nd minute. A give-and-go with Molly Bray allowed Linnell to break free and send the ball into the right side of the goal.
“We played 90 minutes of good soccer,” O’Brien said. “We had everyone contribute which is always positive.”
Along with the contributions, O’Brien was also happy with the possession of the team.
“We picked a strong possessing side and I think it paid off,” O’Brien said. “We were able to keep the ball better than we have all season. I thought the girls really stepped up to the challenge and am really pumped about the movement that we had.
“The passing was crisp and sharp. A couple of the goals we had were magnificent. We capitalized on the great build up and it was really nice to see.”
Anna Buhigas, freshman goalkeeper and reigning A-Sun Defender of the Week, stopped the only shot she faced for her third-career shutout. Alabama State goalkeeper Kylee Hathaway stopped six shots.
Linnell led the Lady Bisons with five shots, placing four on goal. Lundy’s two goals were the only two shots she took, moving her season shot on goal percentage to an impressive 66.7 percent.
Lipscomb returns to its home pitch Monday night facing Austin Peay at 7 p.m.
