ECU And Tulsa Battle To Scoreless Draw
GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's soccer team played to its third consecutive double-overtime scoreless tie in Conference USA action Sunday afternoon against Tulsa at the ECU Soccer Stadium. ECU moved to 8-5-3 on the season and 4-1-3 in league play, while Tulsa moved to 8-5-3 overall and 3-3-2.
In another tough battle, the Pirates recorded their seventh league shutout in eight games and have allowed just two goals, both coming to Memphis on the road. Junior Christiane Cordero was once again stellar in the net stopping all six shots faced. She got help from her defense, who blocked three shots and had a crucial team save at the 93:15 mark when Maddie Maurer headed out a shot by Bradi Hinch on an open net to keep the match scoreless in the first overtime period.
Cordero stopped one shot in the first half, four in the second and added a final save at the 101:59 mark, once again coming off the foot of Hinch for league leading ninth clean sheet. Her counterpart in goal, Katie Bykowski, was equally impressive recording six saves and posting her fourth shutout of the year.
With just under two minutes to play in regulation, senior Chrissy Gratz received a pass from senior Caty Butler and sent a shot from 30 yards out over Bykowski's head, who was playing at the top of the box, that hit the crossbar and bounced out of the field of play.
Senior Hali Oughton put a shot on goal in the 98th minute from 35 yards out, but Bykowski was there to corral the ball. ECU had two final shots in the second overtime period. The first came from senior Rachel Wechsler, who sent one high over the net, then senior Rachel Fuller took a sliding shot towards the left side of the goal with 20 seconds remaining right at Bykowski.
Tulsa outshot ECU on the afternoon 22-15 (7-6 on goal) and also held the edge in corners, 6-2. ECU's Gratz led all players with seven shots, two on goal, while teammate Wechsler and Tulsa's Hinch each had four.
ECU will be back in action next weekend when they travel to nationally-ranked UCF on Friday, Oct. 19 (7 p.m./ET) and Southern Miss Sunday, Oct. 21 (2 p.m./ET). The Pirates will close out the season at home in two weeks on Thursday, Oct. 25 when they host Marshall (7 p.m./ET) on Senior Night.
