Eligwe, #14 MSU blasts Dustdevils 2-0
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Junior VcMor Eligwe provided an offensive spark and the 14th-ranked Midwestern State defense stifled upstart Texas A&M International for a 2-0 season opening win Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field.
The victory extended the Mustangs' home field unbeaten streak which dates back to 2007 to 42 games.
"I'm very proud of you," MSU coach Doug Elder said hugging the 6-foot forward after a very physical match. "We played a good team with good speed and talented player. We've got to also give credit to the defense for holding a team of this caliber to two shots."
Eligwe just had one thing on his mind as he got on the end of a brilliant serve of a through ball down the right wing from Idi Camara in the 61st minute.
"All I could think about was the finishing drills we had this week," he said. "Coach (Michael) Meachum tells to pick a side and go with it. I stayed and took a couple by myself yesterday and felt very comfortable because that's just what we've been doing."
Eligwe took a throw in just outside of the box on the left wing in the 71st minute, spun and served a cross to sophomore Len Smith who volleyed in the put away tally to give the Mustangs a commanding 2-0 edge.
"I was just trying to get it down the line," he said. "I'd tried to do the same thing in the first half with Lenny but we were just unlucky."
The Midwestern defense wasn't counting on luck at all as it limited the regionally-ranked Dustdevils to first half shot by Oscar Pompa and a second half blast by Adrian Elicerio - both were outside of the 18 and on goal.
Transfer junior keeper Ray Clark made the two saves to preserve a clean sheet in his first start at Midwestern State.
The Mustangs host the Alumni Game Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the MSU Soccer Field before hitting the road to face Newman on Friday, Sep. 7 in the Wichita, Kan.
