Elliott earns national honor from CS360
October 24, 2012
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Paige Elliott of Lehigh women’s soccer has been named a College Soccer 360.com Primetime Performer of the Week following her stellar play in wins over Bucknell and Colgate last weekend. The freshman defender led the Mountain Hawks to consecutive victories that pushed the squad into the Patriot League Tournament picture with one game remaining in the regular season.
The Primetime Performer distinction is earned by a player who performed at a high level and contributed to team success as Elliott was one of only 18 players in the nation honored for the week of Oct. 15-21. Other honorees include student-athletes from notable programs like Tennessee, Wake Forest, Northwestern, LSU and Boston College.
Elliott played all 195:31 in the two weekend wins and helped Lehigh allow just one goal against a pair of strong offenses. After the Mountain Hawks conceded a goal to Bucknell just 30 seconds into Friday’s game, Elliott and the Lehigh defense stood tall, allowing no goals over the ensuing 195:01 to close out the weekend. The Apison, Tenn. native also created a number of good scoring chances by transitioning to offense from her right back position, the most notable chance coming when she hit the post against Bucknell in overtime and came inches away from winning the game for Lehigh.
The shutout against Colgate marked just the second time all season the Raiders had been held scoreless; the only other time was Aug. 24 against Washington. Colgate had tallied 15 goals over their five league matches entering the tilt. The Raiders feature the Patriot League’s top two scorers in Jillian Kinter and Catherine Williams. Colgate was also riding a five-game winning streak and had not been shut out by Lehigh since 2004.
Elliott has played in all 16 games, starting 14. She’s scored two goals on the season, tied for fourth, while her five points put her fifth on the squad.
The pair of wins leaves Lehigh very much alive for the fourth and final postseason spot in the Patriot League, and within three points of fourth place Bucknell, heading into Saturday’s regular season finale. Elliott and the Mountain Hawks host Holy Cross Saturday at 2 p.m. in a crucial matchup that Lehigh must win to stay alive in the Patriot League Tournament chase. The game is also Senior Day as the Mountain Hawks seniors will be honored prior to kickoff.
