Ephs bounce back to take down Camels 1-0
NEW LONDON, CT - Williams men's soccer recovered from yesterday's loss to Tufts to defeat Conn. College today 1-0. The Ephs climb to fourth in the NESCAC with the win, improving their conference Record of 4-2-2 and their overall record to 6-3-2. The Camels fell to 4-4-1 in the conference and 7-4-1 overall.
"I was very pleased with the way the team was resilient after a disappointing performance yesterday," Head Coach Mike Russo said.
The decisive goal came in the 64th minute, when the Ephs were awared a penalty kick following a Camel handball in the box. Right-back Philip Vestergaard '12 stepped up to the spot and hammered the kick past the Camel keeper to put the Ephs up 1-0.
Conn. College appeared to be back in the game when they were also awarded a penalty kick 10 minutes later. However, Williams keeper Than Finan '13 was more than ready for the strike. When the ball was driven to his left, he ranged out to parry the ball to safety and preserve the Eph lead - and, ultimately, the Eph victory. "He is exceptional on PKs, and he proved his worth again today," Eph Assistant Coach Jeff Huffman said. Finan finished with six saves on the game.
The Ephs outshot the Camels 13-10 on the match, but only managed to direct two shots on goal, including Vestergaard's strike.
Williams will now prepare to take on Colby in Williamstown next Saturday at 1 p.m. Conn. College takes on Coast Guard next Saturday at home at 12 p.m.
