Fairfield Stuns Saints In Overtime
Sarah Gerali scored the golden goal in the 96th minute as Fairfield defeated Siena Women’s Soccer 2-1 in overtime in Connecticut. Junior Cassy Landis scored for a third straight match for the Saints.
Gerali finished a feed from Ashley Small just five and a half minutes into overtime as Fairfield (13-3-1, 7-1) kept pace with Monmouth atop the MAAC Standings.
Following a scoreless first half, the Stags struck first in the 54th minute on Cassidy Boegel’s eighth goal of the fall. Both of Fairfield’s goals and 11 of their 18 shots came from reserves.
But Landis would net the equalizer for the Saints (6-6-5, 3-2-3) in the 75th minute. She finished a cross from senior Maria Jones for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Siena took a pair of shots and attempted two corners in the final three minutes of regulation, but couldn’t cash in on the late surge as the Saints played in their fourth straight overtime match and seventh of the year.
Senior captain Taylor Booth made seven saves for the Saints which saw their six match unbeaten streak snapped. It was just the Saints’ second loss in their last 12 matches with both defeats coming against Fairfield and Monmouth, the two teams tied for first atop the MAAC.
Siena can clinch a MAAC Tournament berth win a win against Rider Saturday on Senior Day. Just prior to the 1 p.m. match the Saints will honor their six graduating seniors.
