Fairleigh Dickinson Hands Men’s Soccer First NEC Loss, 2-1

November 1, 2011

TEANECK, N.J. – Junior forward Philip Suprise (Milwaukee, Wisc.) netted a goal for the third straight game, but the Quinnipiac men’s soccer team fell to Northeast Conference opponent Fairleigh Dickinson, 2-1, at University Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Quinnipiac’s first NEC loss of the season drops its record to 3-1 in league play (5-5 overall), while the Knights improve to 4-1 in the NEC and 8-3-2 overall.

Suprise gave the Bobcats the early 1-0 advantage in the 23rd minute of play when he controlled a cross from freshman Machel Baker (Spanish Town, Jamaica) inside the goalkeeper’s box, before sending in a blast by the outstretched hands of diving sophomore goalkeeper Jacob Lissek. Suprise, who leads the team with 12 points and shares the team lead with four goals, has now collected at least a goal or an assist in seven of the team’s 10 games played. The assist for Baker was his second of the season.

Fairleigh Dickinson evened up the score, 1-1, midway through the second half in the 67th minute of play when junior Karlis Putans put away his first goal of the season. Junior Jack McVey delivered the ball to Putans, and was credited with his third assist of the season.

McVey netted the game-winning goal eight minutes later in the 75th minute of play, as he curled in a free kick from just outside the goalkeeper’s box into the upper left-hand corner of the net past freshman goalkeeper Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain).

Quinnipiac turned up the pressure in the final 10 minutes of play in an attempt to even the score and nearly did so, but an off-sides call in the 89th minute of play negated what would have amounted to the game-tying goal.

Overall, Fairleigh Dickinson outshot Quinnipiac, 17-to-12. Angoitia collected a game-high four saves, while his counterpart Lissek made three saves for the Knights.

The Bobcats return to action when they travel to face NEC opponent Monmouth on Friday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.
