FAU Women’s Soccer Drops USF Tournament Opener to Jacksonville
Tampa, FL - Jacksonville University scored once in each half to pick up a 2-0 victory over the Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team in the opener of the USF Tournament in Tampa on Friday night.
The Owls takes a 3-2 record into Sunday’s match against the University of Akron, starting at 11:30 a.m., in the tournament. Jacksonville improved to 4-2-1.
Lightning and heavy storms delayed the game for over an hour in the 16th minute. Once action resumed, the Dolphins broke a scoreless tie with a goal from Liz Fink in the 42nd minute.
Jacksonville added an insurance goal on a header from Kaitlyn Bassett in the 63rd minute. The scoring opportunity was set up on a pass into the box by Jessica Hurtado.
FAU recorded eight shots in the match, with four coming in each period. Two shots were accounted by sophomores Brittney Nash and Jesse Shugg, and freshman defender Yazmin Ongtengco. Junior defender Emily Kelly and sophomore midfielder Stephanie Ferro rounded out the shots with one a piece. The team had five shots on goal.
Jacksonville’s Frank had a game-high seven shots, while Bassett added five shots in the win.
