FAU Women's Soccer Falls in 2OT to MTSU
Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team scored two goals in the final 18 minutes of regulation, but visiting Middle Tennessee State University found the back of the net in double overtime to down the Owls 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at the FAU Soccer Stadium.
FAU falls to 3-8 on the season and 1-3 in Sun Belt Conference action. Two of the three league setbacks have come in overtime. The Owls also fell 1-0 in overtime to Western Kentucky University on Friday, September 28. MTSU improves to 9-3 overall and remains perfect in league play with a 4-0 mark.
Freshman midfielder Claire Emslie scored both FAU goals as the Owls squared the match with the Blue Raiders. The Scotland native got behind the defense for a breakaway goal in the 72nd minute. The goal was set up by sophomore forward Rose Cabrale.
Then with one second left in regulaion, sophomore defender Amunique Scott was fouled inside the 18-yard box and the host were awarded a penalty kick. Emslie calmly stepped to the line and drilled the goal to square the match. She leads the team with seven goals on the season.
However, MTSU’s Paige Goeglein scored her conference-leading ninth goal of the season with just under four minutes remaining in the second 10-minute overtime session. Goeglein got a touch on a Kate Loye left crossing pass.
The Blue Raiders scored in the sixth and eighth minutes to take an early 2-0 advantage. Loye scored the first goal for the visitors, while Whitney Jorgenson flicked the ball into the back of the net off a left cross from Tori Hawkins.
Emslie paced the offensive attack with five shots, including four shots on goal. Sophomore midfielder Nina Mas along with freshmen Dani Dangremond, Gabriella Sosa and Cabrale each had one shot.
Senior goalkeeper Ashley Lantes made eight saves in net.
FAU returns to the pitch on Friday, October 5, at 8 p.m. when it travels to the University of North Texas. Live statistics of the match can be found at www.fausports.com.
