Fay's Two Goals Gives Stags OT Win
Shannon Fay scored her second goal of the game 45 seconds into the second overtime period to give the Fairfield University women’s soccer a 2-1 win at The College of Holy Cross on Sunday. The victory gives the Stags a 3-2-1 record for the year, while the Crusaders fall to 2-3-1.
Erin Pettersen fed the ball to Fay as the second overtime got under way and she put the ball into the lower left corner from 10 yards out. It is the first multi-goal game of Fay’s collegiate career and Pettersen’s first collegiate point.
Fay put Fairfield ahead in the 29th minute as she corralled a rebound and tapped home her first goal of the season. Holy Cross drew even in the 34trh minute when Gina Righini knocked home a pass from Cassie Muzik into the top right corner. Fairfield put six of its eight second-half shots on cage, but all were turned away by the Holy Cross goalkeeping combination of Carly McCabe and Ashlyn Angell.
Both squads had a shot on goal in the first overtime period, with both being stopped by the opposing goalkeeper. It marked the seventh save of the game for Stags goalkeeper Veronica Saez, who improved to 2-0 on the season. Saez played the entire game for Fairfield, stopping seven shots. Mccabe started for Holy Cross, stopping nine shots and allowing the first goal, in playing 79:51. Angell had one save and a goal allowed in 20:54 of play in net.
The Stags finished with an 18-13 edge in shots, while Holy Cross held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
The game is the first of five consecutive road games, who travel to the University of Maine for a 3 p.m. game on Friday.
