FDU and Robert Morris Play to Scoreless Draw
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team battled extremely windy conditions Friday afternoon at the North Athletic Complex and earned a point in the Northeast Conference standings with a 0-0 draw against Robert Morris for its second scoreless draw in a row. With the tie, the Knights move to 8-6-4 (4-0-3 NEC) on the season and remain in second place in the conference standings, while the Colonials remain winless in conference play with a record of 4-9-4 (0-4-3 NEC) overall.
The wind really affected the game from start to finish, and each team finished the game with only a few clear chances to take the lead. The first half saw mostly Robert Morris with possession and chances. It took until the 32nd minute for the game's first real chance, as the Colonials' Leah Prentice tried to use the wind to her advantage by sending a deep free kick from 40 yards out straight at senior Sage DoVale. The ball hung in the air and knuckled, and DoVale got just enough of the ball to tip it up and off the crossbar.
Moments before halftime, Robert Morris had its' best chance at a goal on the afternoon when Madison Kozlowski had two shots at point-blank range, one which was saved by DoVale, with the second one being cleared out of play by sophomore Mackenzie Reese.
FDU waited until the 88th minute for their best opportunity to seize victory when freshman Connie Lewis missed by a few inches off a rebound from junior Kasey Schiavoni's shot from distance that hit the crossbar.
The Knights were outshot in the match, 14-12, but rebounded to hold an edge in the second half and overtime, 11-6, after being down 8-1 in the first half. DoVale made six saves in goal for FDU.
The shutout continues a very impressive streak of six-straight clean sheets for the Knights in conference play. DoVale is credited with five in a row and now has eight on the season, which ties her for the school record for shutouts in a career. She has an opportunity to break that record on Sunday, Nov. 3 when the team squares off with Saint Francis University and also in the NEC tournament next weekend.
The match with SFU will determine who finishes atop the NEC in regular season play. If FDU wins, the Knights will own the regular season title, the No. 1 seed in the NEC Tournament and home field advantage throughout the tournament. If SFU wins or the game ends in a draw, coupled with what happens in Wagner's game, the Knights will finish no worse than third.
Kickoff for the NEC regular season title is scheduled for 12 p.m. Sunday in Loretto, Pa.
