FDU Rallies in the Second Half to Take Down Quinnipiac, 2-1
The Fairleigh Dickinson men’s soccer team rallied in the second half with two goals to take down Quinnipiac, 2-1, in a crucial Northeast Conference contest Sunday evening at University Stadium in Teaneck, NJ. With the victory, the Knights move back into first place and improve to 8-3-2 (4-1-1 NEC) on the season, while the Bobcats fall to 5-5-0 (3-1-0 NEC) overall.
Twelve minutes into the match, the Knights had their best scoring chance of the first half as junior #Jack McVey# ripped a shot from 25 yards out towards the lower right part of the goal but was knocked away by Bobcats goalie Borja Angoitia to force a corner kick.
In the23rd minute of the half, Quinnipiac struck for a 1-0 lead as Machel Baker found Phillp Surprise in the far right side of the box who then took a shot towards the lower left corner of the goal, beating a diving #Jacob Lissek#, to put the visitors ahead.
The Knights outshot the Bobcats, 10-7, over the opening 45 minutes, but were outshot, 4-3, on shots on goal.
In the second half during the 67th minute, McVey crossed the ball into the box from the left side and found junior #Karlis Putans# in the middle who was able to get his head on the ball and direct it past Angoitia to tie the match at one.
Eight minutes later in the 75th minute, McVey drew a penalty outside the box. He then took the free kick and buried it in the upper left-hand corner of the goal to give the Knights a 2-1 advantage.
In the 89th minute, the Bobcats thought they tied the match at two with a goal, but it was waived off as they were called offsides. The Knights were able to hang on for the 2-1 victory.
FDU controlled the ball much of the second half and outshot the Bobcats, 17-12, in the match. The Knights fired seven shots on goal, while Quinnipiac shot five on net.
Lissek improved his record to 8-3-2 between the pipes and made three saves. Angoitia turned away four shots for the Bobcats.
The Knights return to action on Friday, Oct. 21, when they travel to Brooklyn, NY to take on St. Francis NY. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
