FDU Shutouts Navy, 1-0
September 1, 2011
The Fairleigh Dickinson men’s soccer team improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2009 with a 1-0 victory over Navy (0-2-0) Thursday night in Annapolis, MD.
Sophomore Liam Cahill scored the eventual game-winner at the 29 minute mark of the first half off an assist from fellow classmate Jonathan Gonzalez.
Sophomore Jacob Lissek picked up his sixth-career shutout with a five save performance in the net, while earning his second victory between the pipes this season.
The Knights outshot the Midshipmen, 14-12, including seven on goal.
“I am really proud of our effort tonight,” said Head Coach Seth Roland. “We gutted out a tough one-nil win against a relentless Naval Academy team. We defended really well and created numerous good opportunities. Their keeper made four spectacular saves, and we hit the crossbar that added to the drama of the game. It was a good win.”
The victory was also the first for the Knights in three chances against Navy.
FDU will have a quick turnaround as they make the short trip to Baltimore, MD to take on UMBC Saturday night in the Holiday Inn Express BWI Classic. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
