FDU Suffers 3-0 Setback to Hartford
Box Score
TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's soccer team suffered its first home loss of the season Sunday afternoon at University Stadium, falling to Hartford, 3-0. With the victory, the Hawks improve to 2-1-2 on the season, while the Knights fall to 2-3-0 overall.
Early on FDU was the aggressor on offense, as sophomore Amanda Goulet and freshman Connie Lewis both had opportunities, but their shots went high and were saved.
The visitors then grabbed momentum and were able to get a pair of shots off of their own. After a foul was called on the Knights in the 26th minute just outside the box on the left side, Hartford's Sidney Spremullo took the free kick and found Amanda Hamilton in the box, who beat Knights' goalkeeper Sage DoVale with a header into the back of the net to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
FDU had a chance to tie the game right before halftime, but the Hartford defense made a great save with the goalie away from the goal on sophomore Esther Rochon's header attempt.
Over the first 45 minutes of action, the Hawks held a 4-3 advantage in shots and took the only two corner kicks of the opening half.
After Hartford missed on a pair of shots in the first seven minutes of the second half, freshman Giselles Perez ripped a shot from about 25 yards out but right at the goalkeeper.
In the 59th minute, the Hawks extended their lead to 2-0 on a goal by Chanel Johnson.
Throughout the rest of the match, both sides battled with nothing else to show for until Hartford's Nicola Winogradoff found the back of the net after a corner kick to give Hartford a 3-0 lead in the 87th minute to seal the victory.
The Knights were outshot, 10-4, in the second half and 14-7 for the match. DoVale made three saves, while Hawks' goalkeeper Jessica Jurg stopped four FDU shots.
"Hartford showed a lot of dynamic movement and athleticism in its front line, which created havoic for us," Head Coach Rick Stainton said. "Unfortunately, we did not play our best today. We wanted to come out strong and put pressure on their back line, but we could not keep possession of the ball, and turnovers led to opportunities for them, which they took advantage of. Give Hartford credit for taking us out of our game plan.
The Knights will return to action on Friday, Sept. 13 when they travel to Easton, Pa. to take on Lafayette for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
