Fiorido Plays Hero As Titans Best Madonna
DETROIT (8/18/18) -- Senior Carly Fiorido has a knack for finding the back of the net late in a game as the Titan captain tied the game with less than a minute to go in regulation and then won it in overtime with 50 seconds remaining in overtime as the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team downed Madonna, 3-2, on Tuesday.
The win moved Detroit Mercy to 3-4-2 on the year and 9-0 all-time against Madonna, who fell to 5-2.
Fiorido – who came into the season with just one career goal – tied the match at 2-2 at 89:12 converting on a penalty kick. In the 99th minute, Fiorido ran onto a long ball hit by senior goalkeeper Marina Manzo and lobbed a ball up and over the keeper's head with great composure, winning the game for the red, white and blue.
Madonna went up by a score of 1-0 in the 17th minute off of a re-directed shot. The Titans answered five minutes later when senior Molly Kane connected on a loose ball in the box from a corner hit by freshman Julie Ann Piechocki and buried it for her second marker of the season.
The score remained 1-1 at the half, but a mere 21 seconds into the second half, the Crusaders regained the lead.
Manzo ended the game with a season-high 11 points and the assist on the game-winning play was the first point in her career.
Detroit Mercy will look to keep the momentum going this weekend when the Titans get back into Horizon League play to battle IUPUI on Saturday.
First Half:
- The Titans fell behind early but evened the score courtesy of senior captain Molly Kane in the 22nd minute
- Manzo had six saves in the first half, including a couple of diving stops
- The red, white and blue battled through the heat to keep the score even at halftime
Second Half:
- The Titans fell behind again just 21 seconds into the second half
- Manzo made two great saves down to her left and one to her right to keep the Titans in the game
- Fiorido converted a penalty kick with ease to level the score at 2-2 with under a minute remaining
Overtime:
- Both teams had scoring opportunities but the defenses stood tall for nearly the entire half
- With just under a minute remaining, Manzo, playing as a sweeper keeper pinged a long ball forward to Fiorido who had a cheeky finish with her right foot up and over the goalie's head
- Manzo ended the game with 11 saves, a new season-high
Game Notes:
- The Titans are now 9-0 all-time against Madonna and have outscored the Crusaders 28-4 in those contests
- Seven of the wins have been shutouts, while the other two victories were 3-2 in overtime
- It was the Titans fourth overtime game of the season, all of which have come in the last five matches
- It was Manzo's third double-digit save performance of the season as she had 10 at South Florida and at Stetson
- Fiorido had just one goal coming into the season
- All three of Fiorido's goals this year have been dramatic with a game-winner against Central Michigan with 20 seconds left and today's game-tying and game-winning strike with less than a minute to go in the period
- Kane also had two goals as a freshman
