Flames Fall Short versus No. 9 UC Irvine, 4-2

CHICAGO - Zach Kaleta and Craig Krzyskowskieach scored their first goals of the season, and the Flames led for two extended periods during the match, but No. 9 UC Irvine scored three unanswered goals in defeating the UIC men's soccer team, 4-2, at Flames Field Sunday afternoon.

The Flames moved to 2-1-2 on the season, while UC Irvine remained unbeaten, improving to 6-0.

UIC got on the board first, when Kaleta capitalized on an executed corner kick from Ivan Stanisavljevic just 3:34 into the game. The Anteaters then knotted the score at 1-1 in the 11th minute, after Christian Hernandez played a ball from Enrique Cardenas mid-way through the 18-yard box.

UIC continued attacking, and grabbed a 2-1 advantage in the 21st minute, after Krzyskowski beat UC Irvine goalkeeper Andrew Fontein on the right wing. Senior Moriba Diallo and Stanisavljevic were both credited with assists on the play.

The Anteaters answered with a goal two minutes later (23:41) after Jonathan Rivas scored his first goal of the season - Hernandez tallied the assist. The first half ended in a 2-2 tie.

UC Irvine took a 3-2 lead in the 57th minute, after Cardenas played a ball from Marco Franco, scoring the eventual game-winner. The Anteaters then completed the scoring with a goal by Christopher Santana with just under 14 minutes remaining (76:06) in regulation.

UIC held a 13-11 advantage in the shots department, and had seven shots on goal. The Flames also recorded five corner kicks. Stanisavljevic now has a team-high three assists on the season.

UIC will return to Flames Field next Friday (Sept. 16), when the Flames begin competition in the Chicago South Loop Hotel UIC Soccer Classic. Wisconsin will take on Drake in the tournament opener beginning at 5 p.m., followed by UIC facing SIU-Edwardsville under the lights at 7:30 p.m. CST.
