FLYERS DOMINATE THE DOLPHINS, 3-0
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Dayton men’s soccer team opened up the UAB “Soccer for A Cure” Classic on Friday evening with a 3-0 victory over Jacksonville.
"It was a great collective effort for the team tonight," said Head Coach Dennis Currier. "They stayed focused even through all of the storm delays. We challenged our forwards the last two games and they have made a difference getting our team out in front as opposed to chasing games. Defensively, we have known going into the season that we have to be patient with an entire new backline. The last two games they have shown tremendous growth and have earned two shutouts."
With a scheduled start time of 5:30 p.m. ET, the game was delayed for over two hours with lightning threatening in the Birmingham area.
The game was finally able to start after 8 p.m. and it didn’t take long for the Flyers to strike. Sophomore James Haupt headed home a cross from sophomore Andrew Lightner in the ninth minute to put the Flyers up 1-0.
That score held until halftime as Dayton went into the locker room with a one-goal advantage. The Flyers kept the momentum into the second half and started piling up the shots on goal.
Senior Ryan Peterson doubled Dayton’s league in the 60th minute with his first goal of the season. It was an unassisted goal and gave the Flyers a commanding lead.
It wasn’t long before senior Greg Enstone extended the advantage to 3-0 in the 76th minute via his first goal of the campaign. At that point in the contest, Dayton had totaled 16 shots in total, 10 of which were on goal.
With a three-goal lead, the Flyers cruised to their second victory of the season by defeating the Dolphins.
Haupt recorded his second goal of the year while Enstone and Peterson picked up their first. Goalkeeper Chris Froschauer and his six saves anchored a Dayton defense that recorded its second shutout in as many games.
The Flyers (2-2) will finish up the tournament against host UAB on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
