FLYERS REMAIN UNDEFEATED IN WIN OVER OHIO ST
DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton men’s soccer team headed north to Ohio State for an interstate showdown and left with a 3-1 win over the Buckeyes.
Dayton entered the contest with an undefeated record and the fifth-ranked offense in the nation.
The Flyers opened up the scoring in the 26th minute on a goal by sophomore Maik Schoonderwoerd. Senior Abe Keller crossed the ball in from the right wing to the six-yard box where Schoonderwoerd headed it home for his second goal of the season.
Dayton went ahead 2-0 in the 35th minute of the first half on a goal by freshman Rafael Gamboa, his first of the year. Keller recorded his second assist of the game and fourth of the year with a precise pass inside the 18-yard box.
The Flyers held a 2-0 advantage at the half after outshooting the Buckeyes 9-6 through the first 45 minutes.
Sophomore Ryan Peterson continued Dayton’s offensive attack in the 48th minute with a headed goal, assisted by Schoonderwoerd. The fifth-ranked Flyer offense continued to push the pace in the contest.
Ohio State scored a goal in the 81st minute to cut the deficit to two at 3-1.
The UD defense would settle in and hold the Flyer advantage for the rest of the contest. Dayton improved its win streak to six straight on the season with a 3-1 final in Columbus.
Schoonderwoerd, Peterson, and Gamboa provided the goals for Dayton while Keller chipped in two assists and Schoonderwoerd added one. Freshman goalkeeper Chris Froschauer held the Buckeyes in check on a rainy Friday night and racked up a season-high six saves in the contest.
Dayton had eight players compete for all 90 minutes in the contest.
The Flyers (6-0-0) will return home to host IUPUI at Baujan Field at 4 p.m. this Sunday. It will be Military Appreciation Day.
