FLYERS TIE VCU; EARN NO. 2 SEED IN A-10
DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton women's soccer team tied VCU 1-1 in double overtime in an Atlantic 10 battle for the tournament No. 2 seed Sunday at Baujan Field. With the tie, the Flyers secured the No. 2 seed.
The Rams scored in the 13th minute off the foot of Cristin Granados.
Senior Colleen Williams scored the Flyers' lone goal on an assist from sophomore Kelsey Smigel in the 87th minute of the match to set up the overtime. Smigel dribbled past defenders and sent a cross into the box. Williams headed the ball into the net for her 17th goal of the season. The Williams goal saved the Flyers from being shut out for the first time this season.
The Flyers are 13-4-1 overall and 7-1-1 in A-10 play. The Rams are the No. 3 seed in the A-10 tournament with their 11-4-4 record and 6-2-1 conference mark.
After sending the match into overtime UD was relentless, outshooting the Rams 11-1 in the two overtime periods. VCU keeper Kristin Carden had 12 saves.
Jordin Melchert had four saves for the Flyers, including a point-blank shot midway through the first overtime.
The top eight teams will now vie for the A-10 Championship tournament title Nov. 1-4 in Kingston, R.I. The Flyers are the three-time defending champs and have won the tournament a conference-record eight times.
