Fontenot shines as Lamar ties HBU
BEAUMONT, Texas - Bailey Fontenot is starting to feel right at home in goal for the Lamar University women's soccer team.
The Beaumont native turned in her second solid effort of the weekend, making a career-high seven saves in Lamar's 1-1 tie with visiting Houston Baptist in a non-conference game Sunday.
Fontenot's biggest save was her last of the game, thwarting Houston Baptist's Emily Hughes on a breakaway with less than three minutes remaining in the second overtime period to preserve the tie.
"That was definitely a huge save," Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. "We were pushing up and had them on their heels when all of a sudden they got a breakaway. But Bailey came up big. I'm very proud of her."
Lamar (2-4-1) got on the board first when Kristin Bos scored her team-high fifth of the season on an assist from Kimmy Albeno 6:43 into the second half. Houston Baptist (3-3-2) evened things up when Lindsay Matlock scored on a penalty kick with 16:27 remaining in regulation.
"Kristin had a great weekend for us with three goals," Cervantes said. "There's nothing Bailey could do on the penalty kick."
Shelby Horn made six saves for Houston Baptist. Lamar held a 24-18 edge in overall shots, and took eight corner kicks to Houston Baptist's two.
"We're getting mentally tougher," Cervantes said. "I really like the way this team is maturing."
The Lady Cardinals wrap up their three-game homestand when they host Texas Southern at 7 p.m. Friday. For ticket information, call (409) 880-1715.
