Fordham Ends Stags Four-Game Unbeaten Streak
The Fairfield University women’s soccer team saw its four-game unbeaten streak come to an end Friday night, with a 4-1 loss to Fordham University. The Stags drop to 3-3-2 on the year, while the Rams improve to 3-6-0.
The Stags outshot Fordham for the game, 13-10, and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Fairfield had four shots in the first 17 minutes of play, two on net, and had two corner kicks in that period, but could not break through.
Fordham didn’t record a shot until the 35th minute, with the Stags having already taken six, and it was the Rams second shot that got them on the board. Kristina Maksuti fed Maria Swift for a shot from 15-yards out to give Fordham a 1-0 lead. Annie Worden made it 2-0 just over four minutes later, collecting a rebound of a Kate McDonnell shot, for her first goal of the year.
Worden gave the Rams a 3-0 lead in the 57th minute, as she knocked home a deflection from the cross bar and hit it home. Fordham wrapped up its scoring 104 seconds later when Maksuti put home a misplayed pass out of the back.
Jac Ley scored her first goal of the season in the 74th minute, netting a pass from Elise Hemmer.
Veronica Saez started in goal for Fairfield and made two saves, allowing four goals, in 75 minutes of action. Sophia DeVita minded the Stags net for the final 15 minutes, not facing a shot, as she made her collegiate debut. Ally White earned the win for Fordham, stopping two shots in 66 minutes, while Rachel Suther allowed a goal and stopped one shot in 24 minutes of action.
The Stags return to action a week from tonight when they open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play on the road to conclude a season-long five-game road trip. Fairfield plays at Rider on September 28, with a 7 p.m. start, and play at Loyola at 1 p.m. on September 30.
