Knoxville, Tenn. – (August 22, 2019) – The Fordham Rams knew they were in for a tough battle in their season opener on Thursday, taking on the 10^th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers at Regal Soccer Stadium. The women’s soccer team also had an unexpected foe in Mother Nature, causing a two-hour thunderstorm delay in fifth minute.  In the end, the Rams put together a solid game, but eventually succumb to the Volunteers by a 3-1 score.

Just 4:14 into the contest, the game was halted due to lightning in the area around Regal Soccer Stadium.  The delay turned into a full blown thunderstorm, causing a two-hour break in action.

The game resumed at 9:10 PM, with Tennessee netting the first goal of the game in the 19^th minute off a corner kick by Katie Cousins.  MA Vignola received the corner and took a shot from 25 yards out, which deflected off a Fordham defender in front and into the left side of the net.

The score stayed at 1-0 into the second half, when Tennessee scored twice in the span of seven minutes, extending the lead to 3-0 by the 55^th minute.

The Rams continued to push Tennessee to get back in the game, and would break up the shutout in the 89^th minute.  Claudia Cuicani took a free kick from the offensive zone putting the ball in the air near the penalty spot.  The ball went off the head of a Tennessee player and off the crossbar.  Fordham’s Amanda Miller would fight off a defender to get to the loose ball and punch it in for her first goal of the season.

The game ended as a 3-1 result, with Tennessee having a 14-8 shot advantage.  In net, Kelly LaMorte made six saves for the Rams, which included a 1v1 left leg save on Michelle Alozie in the 84^th minute.

The Rams are back in action on Sunday, August 25^th, when they travel to Rutgers for a 2:00 PM match.
