Fordham Women's Soccer Tops Utah Valley, 4-2
In what was an extremely offensive contest that saw 39 shots, Fordham's Mariella Romanohad her first career multi-goal game to lead the Rams to a 4-2 victory over the Utah Valley Wolverines at Ellis Field in College Station, Texas. It was the first time Fordham scored four goals in a game since 2009.
With the win, Fordham improves to 4-3-1 on the year, while Utah Valley falls to 3-5-0.
The Rams wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as Mariella Romano netted her second goal of the season on the first shot of the game. Romano took a lateral cross from the right from Annie Worden, and then scored from just left of the penalty area into the upper right corner. The goal came only 3:57 into the contest.
The Wolverines tied the score at one later in the first half, when Regan Clifford scored her first goal of the season in the 34th minute, sneaking the ball between the legs of Fordham goalkeeper Rachel Suther.
The score finished tied a one all by halftime, as the Rams had a 12-9 shot advantage with Suther having four saves in the first 45 minutes.
Fordham regained the lead just three minutes into the second half, when Romano netted her second goal of the game. She scored from the top of the six-yard box into the back left of the net with Michaela Murphy and Mary Soliminepicking up the assists.
Eight minutes later, Utah Valley once again knotted the game, this time on a goal by Natalie Young. Young blasted a line drive kick from the right side of the 18-yard box off an assist by Lexi Robison.
The Rams once again regained the lead in the 68th minute, courtesy of Kristina Maksuti and Maria Lorena Canicatti, as Maksuti scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season from the left side off Canicatti's corner kick.
A little over four minutes later, Fordham grabbed a two-goal lead at 4-2. On the attack, Megan Poiesznetted her second goal of the season past a diving Lauren Sack on a hard shot to the back of the net.
Poiesz's goal wrapped up a four-goal night for the Rams, the first for the team since October 4, 2009, when Fordham posted a 4-0 victory over Xavier.
In goal, Suther finished with six saves, improving her record to 3-3-1, while Sack had eight stops for the Wolverines.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, September 18th, when the Rams play Texas A&M at Ellis Field, beginning at 1:30 PM Eastern.
