<p>COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. &mdash; League coaches picked the Fort Lewis College women&rsquo;s soccer team to finish third in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, RMAC Assistant Commissioner Eric Danner announced today.</p> <p>The Skyhawks, who were ranked No. 10 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire preseason Top 25 poll, were picked to finish behind No. 5 Colorado Mines and Regis in the RMAC standings.</p> <p>&ldquo;Being ranked in the top five of this conference is an honor,&rdquo; said sixth-year FLC head coach Damian Clarke.</p> <p>Additionally, FLC&rsquo;s Madyson Wellcome, a 5-foot-4 junior defender from Chandler, Ariz., was named to the Preseason All-RMAC team. Wellcome was named to a pair of all-region squads a year ago &mdash; the Daktronics All-Central Region second team and the NSCAA All-Central Region third team. She was also a second team RMAC All-Academic pick and was chosen as the RMAC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 18, 2011. This season marks Wellcome&rsquo;s second straight on the Preseason All-RMAC team. A year ago, she was tabbed the Preseason RMAC Defensive Player of the Year.</p> <p>&ldquo;I think she&rsquo;s just a hands-down, very good 1v1 defender and tough on the tackle,&rdquo; said Clarke.</p> <p>The complete RMAC preseason coaches&rsquo; poll includes: Colorado Mines, 6 first place votes, 15 points, 10-2-2 RMAC, 17-2-4 overall; Regis, 4 first place votes, 17 points, 11-3 RMAC, 15-6 overall; Fort Lewis, 25 points, 10-2-2 RMAC, 15-3-4 overall; Metro State, 33 points, 8-5-1 RMAC, 12-7-1 overall; Colorado Mesa, 38 points, 7-3-4 RMAC, 10-8-4 overall; New Mexico Highlands, 50 points, 8-5-1 RMAC, 10-8-1 overall; UC-Colorado Springs, 58 points, 4-9-1 RMAC, 8-9-1 overall; Colorado State-Pueblo, 66 points, 2-9-3 RMAC, 5-11-3 overall; Colorado Christian, 73 points, 1-21-1 RMAC, 5-17-2 overall; and Adams State, 75 points, 4-8-2 RMAC, 7-9-2 overall.</p> <p>Western State started a women&rsquo;s soccer program this season, but will not compete in league games until 2013.</p> <p>The Skyhawks began fall training on Monday. FLC holds its annual Alumnae Game at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 25 at Dirks Field.</p> <p>Fort Lewis opens its season at Midwestern State at 4 p.m. (MDT) on Friday, August 31.</p> <p>FLC&rsquo;s regular season home opener is against Angelo State at noon on Sunday, September 7 at Dirks Field.</p>
