Foster's goal lifts Raptors, 1-0
HAVERFORD, Penn. (September 3, 2011) – Sophomore back Bobby Foster (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township) scored his first career goal to lift the Rutgers University-Camden men’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Widener University on the first day of the Garnet Alumni Classic at Swarthmore College.
It was the season opener for both teams.
Foster scored his goal only 4:30 into the game on a volley off a corner kick by sophomore forward Mitch Grotti (Milmay, NJ/Millville).
Rutgers-Camden held a 12-11 edge in shots and a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Raptors senior goalie Tim VanLiew (Deptford, NJ/Deptford) made seven saves to record his 21st career save, one behind the program record set by Jim Skene (1978-81). It was the 38th career victory for VanLiew, extending his own program mark.
Sophomore goalie Dan Price (Norristown, PA/Kennedy-Kenrick) had five saves for Widener, which also had a team save.
Rutgers-Camden faces host Swarthmore College Sunday at 4 p.m., following a 2 p.m. game between Widener and Immaculata. Swarthmore is ranked No. 8 nationally in the preseason d3soccer.com poll and No. 20 in the NSCAA/adidas Division III poll.
