Four-goal Eruption Sends Panthers Past Storm
September 19, 2011
PAINESVILLE, Ohio – After struggling offensively through the early part of the season with just four goals in the first five games, Ohio Dominican''s women''s soccer team came alive Sunday afternoon at Lake Erie doubling their season total with four scores, including three in the second half, as the Panthers cruised to the 4-0 decision.
With its second straight shutout, ODU improves to 2-3-1 overall and closes to within one win of first in the South Division at 2-1-1. Lake Erie falls to 1-5-0 overall and 0-4-0 in the conference.
From the opening whistle, the Panthers'' offense was able to flex its muscle, peppering the net with 27 shots, including 18 shots on goal, while finishing with a 5-0 edge on corner kicks.
Senior Sierra Patterson (Brecksville, OH) opened the scoring for ODU at the 32:43 mark with her first score of the year and 30th of her career from about 15 yards out off a pass from freshman Broegan Sautter (Bellville, OH).
The Panthers entered the break with the 1-0 advantage, and just 14 seconds into the second, began to pick up steam as junior Kirsten Hoy (Worthington, OH) got free down the right side and finished classmate Jennifer Holton''s (Johnstown, OH) pass for her first goal of the season.
Just under three minutes later, Holton this time was on the receiving end as she headed in her second score of the year off a free kick from about 40 yards away from senior Slone Fleak (Sunbury, OH).
ODU was not done however, as sophomore Olivia Scalzitti (Brecksville, OH) also recorded her season''s first goal, gathering a loose ball throw-in that deflected off a Storm defender and putting it away for the game''s final tally. With both the offense and defense at full speed, the Panthers finished the half with a remarkable 18 shots and 13 shots on goal, while surrendering zero shots by LEC.
ODU returns home at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23 as preseason South Division favorite and current leader, Tiffin, makes the trip to Panther Field.
