September 4, 2012
EDISON, NJ - Iona College women’s soccer sophomore Melissa Frederick was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal for the Gaels against Rhode Island, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Frederick’s tally gave the team their first victory of the season in the 2-1 double overtime contest. The game clinching goal was scored in the 108th minute of play. For Frederick, this was her fifth career goal and first game-winner.
“I couldn’t be more happy for "Freddie" on being named MAAC Player of the Week!," said head coach Mike Barroqueiro. "With all the fantastic players in our conference, for her to be recognized is certainly no small accomplishment. She trains hard everyday and always leaves it all out on the field for us. She is a wonderful representation of what we are all about here at Iona!”
This is the first weekly offensive honor in Barroqueiro’s tenure and the first for the Gaels since Jayne Read was tabbed MAAC Offensive Player of the Week on 9/17/06.
For her efforts, Frederick was also named the College Sports Madness MAAC Player of the Week.
The Gaels will return to the pitch this weekend as they will meet Temple and Saint Joseph’s on the road.
