Freshmen Lead Saints at Holy Cross
Freshman goalkeeper Greg Monroe made seven saves and classmate Aaron Martin scored the equalizer late in the second half to rally Siena Soccer to a 1-1 tie at Holy Cross. The Crusaders held a 20-14 edge in shots and an 8-4 margin in corners as the squads battled to a draw for the second straight year.
Holy Cross (0-1-1) struck first during a see-saw first half which saw both sides control play for different stretches at a time. Mason Brummett gave the Crusaders the lead in the 38th minute, when he ran onto a through ball down the right side from Max Krause and one-touched the finish inside the near right post.
Siena (0-1-2) netted the equalizer in the 75th minute, when a deflected ball found the foot of Martin at the top of the box who blasted home the tying tally under the crossbar. The goal was the second of the young season for the reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week, who has totaled five points over his first three collegiate matches.
Holy Cross registered four of the five recorded shots in and otherwise evenly played overtime, which featured Monroe stopping the best look to preserve the tie.
Henry Stutz made four saves for the Crusaders in a physical affair in which the teams were whistled for a combined 43 fouls and issued five cards.
Siena opens September by embarking upon a four-match homestand, marking the program’s longest in 11 years. The Saints face a second straight Patriot League foe when they host Lafayette in their home opener Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Siena Turf Field.
