Freshmen Spark No. 9 Orediggers Past West Texas A&M, 2-0
GOLDEN – Freshmen Haley Cole and Juliet Mullen each recorded their first collegiate scores as NSCAA No. 9 Colorado School of Mines women's soccer took control late to defeat West Texas A&M, 2-0, on Saturday at CSM Soccer Stadium for its initial win of 2014.
After outshooting WTAMU (0-2) 9-2 in the opening half, the Orediggers (1-0-1) ended the scoreless deadlock with 13:25 remaining as Cole, subbed in less than two minutes earlier, scampered around a pair of defenders to the left penalty box corner and angled home the shot to the lower, right-90.
Mines continued to apply the offensive pressure and added an insurance tally less than seven minutes later at 83:01. Senior Kenzie King served a far side corner attempt – one of the Orediggers' six in the match – to the top of the box, where freshman Laya Rybicki acrobatically flicked on the ball with the back of her foot to Mullen who put away the short, right wing score through traffic from 12 yards.
Led by senior Nicho Cusack with two, Mines had 12 players account for 13 shots, while Cole, Mullen, sophomore Cari Smith and freshman Emily Garnier each directed one shot on goal.
Junior Jayln Yates worked the full 90:00 minutes, turning away all three WTAMU shots on target to move within two shutouts of tying the school's career leader Briana Schulze (26; 2007-10) with 24.
The Orediggers take to the road for the first time next weekend, beginning a season-long five-game road swing at 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12 against St. Edward's at Lewis-Chen Family Field in Austin, Texas.
