Frey’s Goal Lifts ECU Past ODU, 1-0
August 22, 2012

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Freshman Kendall Frey scored her first collegiate goal helping East Carolina (1-1) to a 1-0 victory over Old Dominion (1-1) in women’s soccer action Wednesday night at the ECU Soccer Stadium.

In a game where the Pirates dominated possession, Frey netted the lone goal of the match in the 70th minute. After an ECU corner kick was cleared by ODU to midfield, Danielle Romano served a pass to Kelly Miller, who then sent a center pass from the right that Frey headed into the right side of the goal for the would-be game-winner.

”Earlier this week I had been pushing Kendall to use her height inside the box and tonight it finally paid off,” said ECU Head Coach Rob Donnenwirth. “Overall I thought we dominated in possession and did a great job of pinning them down and finally got a clear shot on Kendall’s goal.”

With wet conditions all night, the Pirates set the pace of play keeping possession for nearly 30 minutes in the first half and had their opportunities to score holding a 5-2 advantage in shots.

Senior defender Hali Oughton took a shot from 20 yards out in the 18th minute that skipped off the slick surface and took a high bounce that ODU keeper Brianna Alvarado just got a hand on for one of her five saves on the night. Romano nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 41st minute sending a shot from 25 yards out off a free kick, where Alvarado once again just got a hand on the ball to send it over the cross bar.

ECU continued to put pressure on ODU’s defense in the second half taking 10 shots (four on goal) to just two Monarch strikes. Seniors Rachel Fuller and Rachel Wechsler along with Kelly Miller each had shots on goal, but Alvarado was able to keep the match at 1-0.

The Pirate defense held the opposition to just three shots all night (one on goal) and junior keeper Christiane Cordero recorded her eighth career clean sheet with he lone save coming in the 79th minute. ODU’s Taylor Mertz nearly knotted the game at one just minutes after Frey’s goal, but Mertz shot sailed just over the cross bar.

For the second-straight match the Pirates walked away with advantage in corner kicks posting 10 to the Monarchs one.

Senior forward Chrissy Gratz lead all players with four shots (one on goal), while Caty Butler, Fuller, and Oughton each added a pair.

The Pirates return to action this Sunday, Aug. 26 when they make their first-ever trip to South Bend, Ind. to square off against Notre Dame at 1 p.m. (ET).
