November 5, 2012
Stony Brook, N.Y. - Freshman Alejandro Fritz (Budapest, Hungary) has been named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week after a five-point outburst helped lead the Stony Brook men's soccer team to a 5-4 win over Binghamton in last Saturday's America East Championship quarterfinals.
Fritz scored two goals and helped on a third goal in the effort. His first goal gave the Seawolves a 2-1 lead. It came in the 27th minute after he collected a loose ball and plugged it into the net on a strong kick.
His second goal was the most important, coming in the 90th minute with 44.5 seconds remaining in the second half. Down 4-3, a scrum ensured in the box, and the ball ended up on Fritz's leg, and he buried the equalizer on an open look to the send the game to overtime, where the Seawolves won in the 100th minute.
Fritz's five points and two goals match the America East Championship single-game record, which is also held by senior Leonardo Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y.), who accomplished the feat in the 2011 final vs. Hartford.
Fritz, who was an America East All-Rookie team selection, ranks second on the team in points (16) and assists (6) and third in goals (5).
Fritz and the No. 3 seeded Seawolves advanced to the semifinals for the fourth consecutive season and will play at No. 2 seed UMBC Wednesday at 7 p.m.
