Gannon Hands Millersville First Conference Loss
Millersville, Pa. – Gannon traveled to Millersville for the first time on Friday and handed the Marauders their first conference loss of the season. The Golden Knights, who were previously 0-2 all-time against Millersville, scored two unanswered goals to defeat the Marauders 3-1 at Chryst Field at Biemsderfer Stadium.
Millersville (6-4-1, 4-1-0 PSAC) came out strong to start the match. The Marauders outshot Gannon by a margin of 10-5, while controlling the ball much of the half.
The Golden Knights (6-7-1, 2-4-0 PSAC), who only had three scoring chances in the first side, opened up the scoring in the 20th minute. Adam Sharbaugh centered the ball to Sean Washek who put it in the right side of the twine for the 1-0 lead.
The Marauders, after several chances, found an equalizer with minutes to go in the first half. Freshman Colby Klumpp chipped the ball from the left side of the box almost putting it in himself. Freshman Christopher Davidson came streaking in from the right side to knock it in from two feet out to knot the game at 1-1.
Gannon received a corner attempt with less than 10 seconds remaining in the half. Washek, earning his third point, sent in the attempt to find teammate Faycal Benjelloun. Benjelloun headed the e ball into the goal with three seconds remaining to take a 2-1 lead into the break.
Millersville continued to put the heat on Gannon’s goalkeeper Jason Barbarino in the second. The Marauders recorded 14 more shots in the second side to outshoot the Golden Knights 24-11 in the match. Barbarino was up to the test making 10 saves in the contest, including several diving saves to keep Gannon’s lead at 2-1.
In the 81st minute, Sharbaugh took the ball into the offensive zone with no teammates around. Sharbaugh went around a Marauder defender and sent the ball left side to find the back of the goal to extend Gannon’s lead to 3-1 with nine minutes to play.
The Marauder received several chances, including corners and free kicks from outside the box in the remaining minutes. Millersville was unable to capitalize on any chances, dropping its first conference game this season.
Millersville stays home tomorrow for its final regular season home game. The Marauders host No. 13 Mercyhurst in a pivotal PSAC and Atlantic Region matchup. Millersville’s five seniors will be recognized prior to game. The game is slated for 3:30 p.m.
Also, fans who attend either the women’s or men’s soccer game tomorrow will receive a free ticket to the football game against Kutztown following the men’s soccer game at 7:30 p.m.
